Portraiture definition

Portraiture definition- Portrait photography or portraiture is photography of a person or group of people that captures the personality of a subject by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses. A portrait picture might be artistic, or it might be clinical, as part of a medical study.

My own interpretation- Its photos of people or living things normally taken with backdrops and normally taken from shoulders and above, like  family photo-shoot.

I chose this photo because its a surreal portrait so it could have a lot of connotations, deeper meanings, that could be said about it. For instance he could

This a photo of Winston Churchill taken by Yousuf Karsh, this photo has very deep and dark tones in it to create quite a serious tone within the photo, as the context of Winston Churchill would be very serious. The mood of the photo is also very serious as his expression is blank, the lighting is very muscular as well as it highlights all of his facial features and makes him appear too be brave and not afraid to take a photo.
This portrait is of Amanda Lepore a model taken by David Lachapelle. The photos mood id very bright and cheerful as the lighting is just directly on her face and there are no dark tones in it, so therefore its very feminine. This photo looks to be based on Marilyn Monroe as its very similar to how her portraits would be.

Landscape Image Bank

Landscape definition

Definition-Landscape photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes vast and unending, but other times microscopic. Landscape photographs typically capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes.

(Landscape)-all the visible features of an area of land, often considered in terms of their aesthetic appeal.

The Zone System

A way of controlling your prints tonal range. The process begins by previsualising your subject as having up to nine tone zones between but not including, pure black and pure white. The tonal range of final prints is adjusted by light readings at the shooting stage, and development at the processing stage. Created by Ansel adams and Fred Archer

F64Group-was a group of seven 20th-century San Francisco photographers who shared a common photographic style characterized by sharp-focused and carefully framed images seen through a particularly Western (U.S.) viewpoint.

Pictorialist- is the name given to an international style and aesthetic movement that dominated photography during the later 19th and early 20th centuries. In general it refers to a style in which the photographer has somehow manipulated what would otherwise be a straightforward photograph as a means of “creating” an image rather than simply recording it. Typically, a pictorial photograph appears to lack a sharp focus (some more so than others), is printed in one or more colors other than black-and-white (ranging from warm brown to deep blue) and may have visible brush strokes or other manipulation of the surface. For the pictorialist, a photograph, like a painting, drawing or engraving, was a way of projecting an emotional intent into the viewer’s realm of imagination.

Pre-visualisation-The concept of previsualization in photography is where the photographer can see the final print before the image has been captured. Ansel Adams dedicates the beginning of his first book to previsualization, and is often quoted as saying “Visualization is the single most important factor in photography”. Understanding then the significance of this approach is of high value for photographers of all kinds, as it has the potential to unlock greater creative vision, and give greater control (and predictability) over the print process.

Aesthetic- the principles of the nature and appreciation of beauty.

Joiners definition

Definition- In the early 1980s, Hockney began to produce photo collages  which he called "joiners," first of Polaroid prints and later of 35mm, commercially processed color prints.

Joiner Photography involves the use of two or more separately taken images of a single scene to create a larger one by physically overlapping them or by digitally merging them. It differs from montage photography in that it looks to expand the area of view of the photograph as opposed to insert several elements into a given picture frame. From this point on there are many directions to take the image in terms of shape, viewpoints, subject, narrative, time and style. These all involve more personal choices by the creator and provide the potential for a more intimate and individually driven photograph.

This is one of David hockneys joiner photos,  It looks like it has been taken in a european country, as the roads are made of that unstable pebble stone and the cars look quite dated, but that depends on when the photo was taken. This photo is interesting because it looks lie the photo has been taken sat slightly different times of the day as some of the leafs are a darker colour compared to others. This could be from the shadows casted or it could be different rates of exposure in the photos, as some of them could have been taken with different shutter speeds and aperture. The thing that i dislike about the photo is it has some blue/grey sections in it and they let down the photo as they take some attention away from the actual main joiner, but if that space was filled with a colour the same as the pavement then it wouldn't draw an attention away. To improve this photo i would try and fill in the blue spaces with the colour of the pavement of just take some more photos around that bit so that it actually fits into the rest of the photo and the scene. Also i would add some more stuff into the photo so that it has more going on and so there's more to look at. I would add some people into so that the photo looks more natural and more like street photography, because at the moment it looks like its been set up to look deserted and like theres nothing actually going on. The problem with people being in the joiner is that it'll be harder to join all of the photos together as people are quite small and the cars already looked really jumbled, so people would be worse. The photographer could take the photos of a bigger size so that it would be easier to join up, but then it would decrease the effect that all the little separate photos give. David Hockney did influence my photographs a little bit as i did take them mostly of the outside of buildings and trees as i find these the most interesting scenes for joiners because you can find a lot going on.

Joiners image bank

I chose all of these photos for my image bank as i think that they will be the most influential photographs for me, as these joiners include things and places that i want to take photos of.For example the joiner of the tree and the joiners of the road and buildings are ones that i have in mind of doing as i think they are intersting and you can get quite a lot of content in it, like cars, people, birds. I chose to include the joiner of the swimming pool becuase i found it really interesting as it was quite different all the other photos as the other photos are all normal and natural photos, whereas the swimming pool looks fake because of the black lines in the pool, I'm not sure if they are designs at the bottom of the pool or if thy have been edited in. Also all of the other photos look like they have been taken from a normal eye level angle, but in this photo its taken from from a birds-eye view so that you can see the water from above, but then behind the pool at the top of the photo graph you can see all of the sun loungers and chairs, to have captured this he would've had of taken them from a normal eye-level because from what you can see they have not been taken from above as you can see the sides of them no the top of them. My favourite photo from these is the photo in the top right and corner, it looks like it has been taken in London as the buildings look like ones in London and it has a tube station, what i like is that its all natural and like street photography, as this photographer has taken the photo whilst people are dong their everyday normal stuff. Which then makes the joiner more detailed as theres more stuff going on in it not just a plain back ground.

Movement/motion definition

Freeze frame definition- An optical effect or technique in which a single frame of film is reprinted in a continuous series, which when shown gives the effect of a still photograph.

Motion Blur definition- The apparent streaking of rapidly moving objects in a still image or a sequence of images such as a movie or animation. It results when the image being recorded changes during the recording of a single exposure, either due to rapid movement or long exposure.

Shutter speed definitionthe nominal time for which a shutter is open at a given setting.

Aperture definition- The unit of measurement that defines the size of the opening in the lens that can be adjusted to control the amount of light reaching the film or digital sensor.

ISO definitionmeasures the sensitivity of the image sensor the lower the number the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain. Higher ISO settings are generally used in darker situations to get faster shutter speeds.

Line Straight Images

5 Straight images-

I used the original for lines as i liked how the photo was taken and how there is a lens flare in it because of how bright and close the sun was pointing to the tree. The good thing about the photo is how theres different colours in the leafs because of the sun and the effect that the sun has had as its made the colour of the sky decreases throughout the photo, also the lens flare is quite a good effect as i never intentionally tired to have it but it just males the photo look like theres more going on. The downside to the photo is that even though the bright sun gives a good effect its too bright and the photo generally has no tones  so it would look bette if some sections were darker than others and there was some more contrast between the un and the tree so that you could see the tree better. To improve this photo i would use levels or curves to edit the lighting in the photo and make the tree a bit more contrasted.

I also chose this photo to represent lines as the everything you see in the photo is placed in a line or has lines on it so its very relevant to the subject. The good thing about this photo is the centre of the photo is full focus and you can really see it in detail but the further depth of the photo is out of focus and so is the very begging of the photo. I also thing that the vibrancy in the photo is very good as it is very eye-catching so people are more likely to look at it. The downside to the photo is the section of the wall that is visible draws some attention from the lines of chocolate and makes the photo look messy and unfinished, so it would look better if the photo was taken from a lower angle so the only thing that visible is the chocolate or a really close shot so nothing else id visible. To improve the photo i would either try to crop the wall out or just make it less visible so i would darken it or just re-take the photo again from a better angle.
